AJ Swope Performance Plaza opened in September of 2023 as a tribute to the late AJ Swope, a popular local musician and budding business leader known across the region for his work in television news and wind energy advocacy.

 

The project was funded in full by local residents, businesses, and foundations who saw a great opportunity to enhance the local music community in AJ's honor.

 

Built within the framework of the historic Sunset Center shopping mall, the unique outdoor venue is an impactful addition to Amarillo's thriving Cultural District.

“Having a performance plaza of this caliber allows us to broaden the scope of our programming to include the performing arts, which further supports the arts community as a whole in Amarillo," says Rachel Flores, executive director of Arts in the Sunset. "AJ was a man with extraordinary talents and a fierce love for his community, and we hope that by bearing his name, this Plaza too will come to know and share the extraordinary.”
